Barack Obama had social media doing double takes this weekend after a throwaway comment about aliens snowballed into a full-blown online frenzy.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The former US President appeared on No Lie With Brian Tyler Cohen on Saturday (14 Feb), where he took part in a quickfire round of questions. What started as a light-hearted exchange quickly turned into a viral moment.
“Are aliens real?” Cohen asked.
Obama didn’t dodge it.
“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in – what is it?” he said. “They’re not being kept at Area 51.”
The remark instantly lit up the internet, as it appeared to throw fuel on longstanding conspiracy theories about the government “hiding” the truth about extraterrestrial life from the general public.
Area 51, the highly classified section of Edwards Air Force Base in Nevada, has long been at the centre of conspiracy theories — particularly since the 1947 discovery of an alleged “flying disk” near Roswell, New Mexico. While the US government maintains the facility is used for flight testing and experimental aircraft development, rumours of hidden extraterrestrial artefacts have persisted for decades.
Obama leaned into that lore during the podcast appearance, adding: “There’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”
Within hours, clips of the exchange were circulating widely, with some viewers questioning whether the 44th President had just confirmed alien life — or hinted at something bigger.
Reddit immediately blew up, with theories about what Obama’s comments meant. “It’s a gradual plan of disclosure, so humanity can absorb the incoming shock a bit easier,” one person wrote. Another suggested that Obama is “stealing Trump’s thunder” and suggested the current POTUS is planning a speech announcing the existence of aliens.
“He wasn’t allowed to say anything, but he is now, and was encouraged to do so. The interviewer knew beforehand,” wrote a third. “They are preparing the population for what is coming.”
However, another person joked: “If aliens are real and the president of the US gets this information do you honestly believe the current one is keeping it to himself?”
The attention grew so intense that Obama later issued a clarification.
Taking to Instagram, he addressed the viral reaction directly. Sharing the clip, he wrote: “I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it’s gotten attention, let me clarify. Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there.
“But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extra-terrestrials have made contact with us.
“Really!”
In other words: calm down.
Obama, who served as president from 2009 to 2017, stressed that while the sheer scale of the universe makes the existence of life elsewhere statistically plausible, he encountered no proof of alien contact during his time in office.
Even so, the clarification didn’t entirely quiet the jokes.
“Blink twice if the aliens made you say this,” one Instagram user quipped. Another added: “No contact with us…YET.”
This isn’t the first time Obama has publicly entertained questions about extraterrestrials. In a 2021 appearance on late-night television, he previously joked about asking whether there was a lab “where we’re keeping the alien specimens and space ship” upon entering office, before noting that “They did a little bit of research and the answer was no.”
Still, it was the phrasing of “They’re real” that grabbed headlines this time around. But, as it stands, Obama’s official position is clear: the universe is vast, the odds of life elsewhere are strong, but there’s no evidence Earth has been visited.
At least, not that he saw…
…Really!
